Endodontics

Endodontics is a branch of science that deals with infections originating from the root canal. In cases where the pulp is damaged in such a way that it cannot repair itself, the treatment applied is called root canal treatment. The pulp is a soft layer consisting of a vascular nerve packet located in the innermost part of the tooth. Usually, bacteria in broken teeth or deep caries cause inflammation of the pulp. If the inflamed or damaged pulp is not removed, it causes infection in the tooth and surrounding tissues and tooth extraction may be required.

How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

1. The first stage starts with the anaesthesia applied to the tooth in order to make the treatment painless.
2. Then the decay is cleaned and the inflamed pulp is removed. All nerve and tissue residues in the root canal are cleaned.
3. The canals are shaped up to the root tip and the root canals are frequently washed with appropriate solutions.
4. Root canal treatment can be completed in a single session, or in the presence of any intense infection, it can take more than one session and temporary filling can be placed on the tooth between sessions.
5. Then, a special filling material placed in the root canals is filled up to the root tip and the treatment is completed by making a permanent filling.

After taking measures to prevent the tooth from decaying and becoming infected again, a root canal treated tooth can be used for a lifetime. Regular dentist control is essential in this process.

The process of cleaning the nerve tissue in the canals located at the roots of the tooth is called root canal treatment.

In cases where intervention of tooth decay with filling is insufficient, if there is inflammation, if tooth decay has progressed, if there is pain, if tooth color darkening has occurred, if there is excessive sensitivity to hot and cold, canal treatment is applied to the tooth.

Root canal treatment is a procedure that must be performed to save the tooth. It does not depend on preference. Root canal treatment should be performed before filling the infected tooth. Root canal treatment is a treatment that can be repeated. The filling is cleaned, the old canals are removed, the tooth is shaped, medication is applied and it can be filled again.

The duration of treatment may vary depending on the number of canals, location in the mouth and infection status of the tooth. Root canal treatment can be completed in one session if there is no infection or cyst formation in the pulp. Generally, the treatment takes 2 sessions because the tooth is infected. A single session of root canal treatment can last up to 45 minutes. The tooth canal should be cleaned and shaped very well in the first session. Local medication is applied to the cleaned area to kill the harmful microorganisms there. In the 2nd session of root canal treatment, if there is no inflammation in the canal, if there is no sensitivity in the patient’s tooth, if the x-ray is clean and there is no disorder in the surrounding tissue, the tooth is filled.
