Why is a Retaining Plate Important?

What is a Reinforcement Plate?

Retention treatment is performed after orthodontic treatment with braces to maintain the positions of the teeth. It can be done with fixed, removable, or clear aligners. Regular use is essential to prevent the teeth from returning to their original position. Cleaning and checking the aligners regularly is crucial for oral hygiene. Treatment generally lasts between 6 and 12 months.

Retention treatment, performed after orthodontic treatment, is used to maintain the new positions of the teeth and prevent them from shifting. It is further divided into fixed and removable retainers, and then into fixed retainers, removable retainers, and clear aligners. The appropriate method is determined based on the patient's needs, and treatment begins accordingly. Adherence to the treatment is crucial; neglecting it can cause the teeth to revert to their original position.

What are the types of reinforcement therapy?

  • Fixed retainer (Lingual retaining wire)
  • Removable retainer (Hawley appliance)
  • Transparent retaining plate (Essix retainer)

Fixed Retainer

A retainer wire is attached to the back surface of the front teeth. It is secured with a special adhesive. It is generally used behind the teeth and the patient doesn't need to remove it. It is relatively easy to use and there is no risk of the patient not using it. Since it is not visible from the outside, the patient has no aesthetic concerns. However, it is difficult to maintain and requires great care.

Movable Retainer

It is used as a thin wire on the front surface. It is especially used for the upper jaw. It is long-lasting and durable. Also, because it is adjustable, minor adjustments can be made. Due to its wire structure, it should be removed while eating or talking.

Transparent (Essix) Reinforcement Plate

They are made from transparent materials, prioritizing aesthetics. They have a similar structure to Invisaligners (transparent aligners that act as wires). They are lightweight, comfortable, and almost invisible. Regular use is important.

Points to Consider During the Reinforcement Therapy Process

Oral hygiene and the hygiene of the appliances used must be carefully maintained. For the course of treatment, it is essential to diligently follow the usage instructions given by the dentist. Follow-up appointments should not be missed, and treatment should be performed regularly. If the appliance breaks or is lost, the dentist must be contacted immediately.
