What are the differences between ceramic and metal orthodontic braces?

What are the differences between ceramic and metal orthodontic braces?

Orthodontics is a comprehensive treatment method applied to patients to correct crooked or spaced teeth, align teeth, resolve bite problems, and improve overall oral health. In this treatment method, teeth are gradually guided to the desired position by applying gentle and constant pressure.

In orthodontic treatment, brackets (attached to each tooth), arch wires (connecting the brackets), ligatures (small bands holding the wires in place) are generally used, and special orthodontic elastics are also used to adjust bite alignment. This patient-specific treatment method aims to correct jaw joint occlusion and align teeth.

There are two options for orthodontic wires used in braces treatment: metal braces and ceramic braces. Both treatment methods are used and have their own characteristics.

Metal Orthodontic Treatment

This is the most preferred treatment method in orthodontics. Made from stainless steel and titanium, its durability and strength make it a treatment method used to aesthetically correct and align difficult, crooked, or spaced teeth. Metal braces, with their robust structure, are also used in challenging treatments. They are resistant to breakage, and if they come loose during treatment, they can be reattached.

Ceramic Braces Treatment

Ceramic braces offer the same treatment function as metal braces but differ in aesthetics. For ceramic braces, transparent brackets or brackets that match the patient's tooth color are used for aesthetic reasons when smiling. Patients who don't want their braces to be visible choose this treatment method. The treatment duration for ceramic braces may be slightly longer than for metal braces. They are generally preferred in orthodontic cases that are not very difficult, such as those where the force applied to the teeth or bracket breakage is a concern.

Which treatment method should be chosen?

The treatment method may vary depending on the patient's needs.

  • Metal braces are strong and provide quick results, while ceramic braces are less noticeable and less aesthetically pleasing, and the healing process may take longer. Metal braces generally yield faster results due to their durability and resistance to breakage.
  • While metal wire treatment uses stainless steel brackets, ceramic wires use tooth-colored ceramic or clear brackets for a less noticeable appearance.
  • Ceramic braces are a type of standard braces, but they use clear or tooth-colored brackets instead of metal for a more natural look. Patients may opt for ceramic braces if they are aesthetically uncomfortable with the metallic appearance.
  • In terms of price, ceramic orthodontic treatment can be more expensive than metal-supported orthodontic treatment, depending on the treatment process and the likelihood of fractures.

Regardless of your chosen orthodontic treatment, regular care and hygiene are essential. You will need to use cleaning tools like brushes and dental floss to prevent staining and plaque buildup. While metal brackets don't stain and ceramic brackets are stain-resistant, the elastic bonds are not. Careful rinsing and brushing after consuming tea, coffee, cigarettes, or colored foods and drinks are also recommended.
