Like all other teeth... These teeth, when positioned correctly in the mouth, can perform the same function as all other teeth and make a significant contribution to chewing function.. However, wisdom teeth often need to be extracted because they cannot find enough space to erupt due to issues such as jaw narrowing.

Why do wisdom teeth erupt?

Wisdom teeth can be considered like backups for molars. Since most individuals do not lose their molars at an early age, wisdom teeth wait until adulthood to erupt.. In other words, if molars are lost at a young age, wisdom teeth are the teeth that fill the gap. Wisdom teeth usually erupt at age 18 or 20, but sometimes they can erupt later, and in some people, wisdom teeth never develop at all.

Why are wisdom teeth extracted?

Often, wisdom teeth, unable to erupt due to jaw narrowness or irregular tooth alignment, cause infection or lesions. Because of the discomfort they cause, wisdom teeth are extracted to clear the area of potential complications. Additionally, impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems; in these cases, extraction is decided upon and the tooth is surgically removed. Extraction is not recommended for wisdom teeth that erupt regularly and do not pose a problem, or for impacted teeth that do not cause issues.

How is a wisdom tooth extracted?

Wisdom teeth are extracted either normally or surgically.

Wisdom teeth that have erupted normally and have no root problems but cause discomfort to the patient can be easily extracted under local anesthesia with technical intervention by the dentist. In most cases, stitches are not required for normal wisdom teeth, but in rare cases, stitches are used to help the gums heal faster. The dentist may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection before or after extraction; this is not the case for every wisdom tooth.

Wisdom teeth that require surgical intervention are generally impacted or partially impacted. Because these teeth cannot find any space to erupt, they often cause infection, and antibiotic use is recommended before the procedure. The extraction is performed under local anesthesia in a sterile environment using surgical instruments and the dentist's technical skills. Sometimes, general anesthesia is also used for advanced wisdom teeth requiring surgery. After the extraction, the lesion area is usually cleaned and stitched. Stitches are often used to promote faster gum healing and prevent food particles from entering the extraction site. If the dentist did not prescribe antibiotics before the extraction, they will certainly prescribe them afterward.

In upper wisdom tooth extractions, the tooth itself is locally anesthetized; sometimes numbness is felt in the nose and around the eyes. In lower wisdom tooth extractions, the entire area around the tooth to be extracted is locally anesthetized, and that area is temporarily numb. Often, roots extending to the visible nerve in the lower jaw are visible; in such cases, the doctor requests a CT scan, and the extraction is performed considering the proximity of the nerve to the tooth roots, because any complications that may arise during the extraction could cause permanent numbness in that area. The extraction is performed with this in mind, the patient is informed of the possible complications, and the procedure is carried out according to the patient's wishes.

What to do after wisdom tooth extraction?

After wisdom tooth extraction, the dentist will place a sterile gauze pad on the extraction site. This gauze pad should be kept in the mouth for approximately 30 minutes, pressing firmly against the extraction area. Afterwards, it should be removed and discarded with clean hands.

If your doctor instructs you to do so, you can apply ice to the extraction site externally for 5 minutes while resting; this will help reduce the likelihood of swelling in that area.

You can eat 2 hours after the procedure.

Considering the healing process of the area, hard and hot foods should be avoided, and soft and lukewarm foods should be preferred.

Rinsing and spitting should absolutely be avoided for the first 24 hours.

After 24 hours, the area should be cleaned of food particles or plaque by brushing and rinsing with the mouthwash recommended by your doctor.

We need to speed up the recovery process by not smoking or consuming alcohol.

We need to take the medications prescribed by our doctor regularly.

These substances are applied in all tooth extractions, whether performed normally or surgically.

Brushing your teeth after wisdom tooth extraction?

Brushing can be done 24 hours after the extraction. However, brushing should be done carefully with a soft brush until the wound heals. Once the wound has completely closed, we can return to our usual brushing routine.

How long does bleeding last after wisdom tooth extraction?

Bleeding after wisdom tooth extraction usually begins immediately after the procedure, intensifies within the first few hours, and continues throughout the day. The bleeding then slows down. It usually stops within 24 hours.. However, in some cases, slight bleeding or pinkish saliva may continue for a few more days. This is perfectly normal and will eventually stop.

When should wisdom teeth be extracted?

If a wisdom tooth is causing pain in the mouth, the first step is to see a dentist. If it causes pressure and misalignment in the side and front teeth, and if it cannot erupt to the surface, it remains impacted, causing pain and infection., The dentist decides that the tooth needs to be extracted.

What happens if wisdom teeth are not extracted?

Wisdom teeth are generally located in the back of the mouth and are difficult to reach, making them quite challenging to clean. Because they cannot be cleaned properly due to food residue and plaque buildup, they can eventually decay and cause pain. Other common problems they can cause include:;

Tooth decay: Impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth can make surrounding teeth and the entire area around them difficult to access and clean properly. This increases the risk of tooth decay and infection, in particular.

Gum problems: When the area around wisdom teeth is not cleaned adequately, symptoms such as swelling, redness, sensitivity, and inflammation of the gums may occur.

Pain and tenderness: Wisdom teeth that erupt incorrectly and force their way out cause pain, tenderness, and discomfort. In this case, even simple daily activities like eating and speaking can become painful.

Cyst and tumor formation: If wisdom teeth erupt incorrectly or forcefully within the jaw, cysts or tumors may form around them. This increases the risk of swelling, pain, and infection in the jawbone. In some patients, it even causes significant swelling both inside the mouth and on the outer part of the area where the tooth erupts, i.e., the cheek area.

Impaction and eruption problems: If wisdom teeth (20-year molars) cannot erupt properly within the jaw structure, they can cause impaction and eruption problems. Therefore, they can put pressure on other teeth, become crowded, or erupt in the wrong direction.

Sinus problems: Since the roots of the upper wisdom teeth are close to the sinus cavity, failure to extract these teeth can cause sinus problems. Symptoms such as sinus infections, a feeling of pressure, and headaches may occur.

In this situation, extraction of wisdom teeth is recommended. However, these guidelines do not apply to everyone; if there is sufficient space in the mouth and the wisdom tooth has erupted in the correct position and is not causing discomfort, extraction may not be necessary.

If you would like to get pricing information for wisdom tooth extraction, you can visit İnci Dental Clinic.

Genelde 18 veya 20 yaş arasında sürdüğü görünen bu dişler halk arasında 20 yaş dişi olarak anılır aslında bu dişler 3. büyük azı dişidir.
