This procedure is performed to prevent the patient from losing their chewing ability and to restore aesthetic appearance (due to sagging cheeks and lips caused by the absence of teeth) when natural teeth are missing. Initially, when the patient comes to the clinic for examination, their general health, X-rays, and bone condition are evaluated, after which the patient is referred to a specialist for the prosthesis fabrication process.

The outer part of the tooth is covered with hard enamel tissue, while the inner part contains a cavity extending along the root, composed of blood vessels and nerve tissue. The tissues that give the tooth its vitality and life are the blood vessels and nerves located in this central cavity of the tooth, called the pulp. During root canal treatment, the soft tissue, or pulp, and the nerve located in the natural cavity inside the hard tissue of the tooth, called the root canal, are removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned, and then the opened cavity is filled with artificial nerve tissue.

The nerve removed from the tooth is not vital for tooth health and function, but its removal prevents the person from experiencing severe pain. This nerve is only a sensory nerve used for hot and cold perception. A root canal treated tooth loses its vitality, and the tooth only helps protect the surrounding bone and continues its chewing function. However, a tooth that has lost its vitality is quite susceptible to fracture and discoloration, so it is recommended to have a crown placed on it.

What are the steps involved in the creation of a complete denture?

Measurement Taking

After preparing the most suitable impression materials for the patient's mouth and taking custom impressions, these impressions are sent to the laboratory, and work on the custom prosthesis begins. During this stage, the technician and the physician are in constant communication to ensure the patient receives an aesthetically pleasing and functional prosthesis.

Rehearsal and Check Phase

Complete dentures are made from acrylic, a pink resin that resembles gum color. The form, color, and aesthetic expectations of the prosthesis are determined to be compatible with the patient's original natural teeth. After trials, it is expected that the prosthesis will have a natural appearance and aesthetic fit. Although complete dentures may initially be difficult for the patient to get used to due to their size, they can be used comfortably by the patient within a short time.

Final Stage

When the complete prosthesis is nearing completion, a final trial and fitting is performed to check whether the prosthesis fits properly and sits in the mouth. Meeting aesthetic expectations is also essential during this check-up.

How do complete dentures look in the mouth?

Complete dentures are held in place in the upper jaw by the adhesion force created by the vacuum of saliva between the prosthesis and the surrounding tissue. However, the placement of the prosthesis in the retentive areas of the tissues also increases retention. The thin bone surface of the lower jaw is one of the most significant factors reducing retention. Another important factor affecting retention in the lower jaw is the tongue. Tongue movement can cause the prosthesis to shift and not sit properly in the mouth. Another crucial factor in denture retention is the precise fitting of the lips and cheeks to the edges of the prosthesis, which positively impacts retention.

Do complete dentures cause speech impediments?

When fully fitted, complete dentures do not cause any problems in the mouth. Initially, patients may experience some difficulty speaking during the adjustment period, but they can adapt after a few days. Speaking aloud or reading from a book makes the process easier.

What problems can be encountered with the use of total dentures?

If such problems occur, the patient should visit their doctor for a check-up and inform them of the situation.

Prosthesis moving around in the mouth

Biting the cheek or tongue

Joint pain

Speech disorders

Formation of a blow

Hastanın ağız içinde kendi dişlerinin çürük, diş eti çekilmesi, travma kaynaklı yada hiç diş olmadığında yapılan üst ve alt çeneden ölçü alınarak yapılan hareketli protez işlemine “total protez” denir.
